THE MIX, STEP BY STEP

A little help.
Back to your mix.

From your first two tracks to a finished mix. Choose your platform for the right controls and shortcuts.

Showing instructions for macOS.

Mixxit is available for Mac. Windows is coming soon. Check availability →

01 / GETTING STARTED

Your first mix

You’ll need an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs are not supported.

Install Mixxit

Visiting on a phone or tablet? On the download page, choose Copy download link and open the link on your Mac. If copying is unavailable, select and copy the displayed address. Mixxit requires an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later; it does not run on phones or tablets.

Open the downloaded DMG and drag Mixxit to Applications. Open Mixxit, verify your email and choose Start my trial, or enter your purchased licence key.

  1. Bring in your tracks

Choose File → Import Audio… and select music from your computer. Wait for analysis to finish in the Library.

  2. Build the timeline

Use + to add tracks. Drag clips to arrange their order and overlap two tracks to create a transition.

  3. Listen and adjust

Press Space to play or pause. Select a clip to adjust its timing, tempo and volume.

  4. Save, then export

File → Save keeps your editable project. File → Export Audio… creates a WAV or MP3 to listen to or share.

02 / YOUR MUSIC

Import & Library

Import individual tracks from the File menu, or use the Library’s folder button. Analysis adds BPM and estimated key information to help you explore your music.

A key is a starting point, not a guarantee that two tracks will sound good together. Listen to the sections you want to overlap.

How do I pause or restart analysis?

Use Pause in the Library, then resume when ready. In Analysis options, choose Cancel remaining analysis to stop queued work, or Analyze remaining files to finish or retry it. Files and completed results stay in your Library.

A track will not play or finish analysis.

Check that its audio file is available and plays outside Mixxit. Then retry the preview or choose Analyze remaining files. A track may need a brief preparation step before it plays or appears on the timeline.

To stop pending additions, use Cancel beside the preparation count. Tracks already added stay in your mix.

Audio is missing when I reopen a project.

Make the audio files used by the project available again, then reopen it. Check external drives and files you have moved or renamed. Keep your project and its audio together in your backups.

Can I check a track’s key again?

Wait for analysis to finish, then right-click the Library track and choose Reanalyze key. This refreshes its key estimate without changing the clips in your mix.

03 / THE TIMELINE

Editing & transitions

Arrange and trim

Drag a clip to move it, including between the main lanes. Use its trim controls to choose the section you want to hear. Select a clip before using the controls below the timeline.

Shape the handover

Right-click a clip to add automation. Use volume to fade tracks in and out, and EQ to make room for the next track. Listen through the overlap and press ⌘ Z to undo a change.

How do I change the opening track?

Drag a Library track to the start of a main lane and hold briefly until the insertion preview appears. Drop it to insert at 0:00 and move the existing mix after it. Adjust the new overlap afterwards.

Deleting the earliest clip brings the remaining mix back to 0:00, keeping its relative timing. Press ⌘ Z to undo.

How do I protect a finished clip?

Click its padlock or right-click and choose Lock Clip. You can still listen, select and copy it. Unlock it before editing. A lock protects individual edits; changing the opening track can still shift the whole arrangement together.

How do I see more of the timeline?

Use Zoom to change how much time you see. Drag the divider above the clip controls to adjust lane height; double-click it to reset.

04 / MATCH THE PACE

Match Tempo

Choose which clips should share a tempo. Setting a target BPM alone does not change playback speed.

  1. Set the target

Enter a target BPM, or select a clip and choose Use Clip BPM.

  2. Match a clip

Select it and choose Match Tempo. Repeat for the other clips you want to adjust.

  3. Listen to the overlap

Adjust where the next clip starts. Matching tempo does not automatically line up the beats or musical phrases.

05 / QUICK REFERENCE

06 / LISTENING & EXPORT

Audio & export

Choose where you listen

Open Mixxit → Settings…, then Audio. Choose your headphones or interface, or use System default. This applies to the timeline and Library preview. Press Play again after switching outputs.

Export your mix

Choose File → Export Audio…. Use WAV for an uncompressed copy or MP3 for a smaller file. Choose where to save it, then listen to the exported result. Exporting does not replace saving your project.

How do I read the Master meters?

The two rows show the left and right output channels. The coloured bars respond quickly to signal peaks and fall back between hits. Yellow and red segments show peaks approaching full scale. A red warning strip records clipping and can stay lit after the bars fall. Lower Master or the clip level if it lights up. This is a playback level guide, not a loudness or true-peak measurement. Check the export summary and listen to your exported file too.

Playback is silent. What should I check?
  1. Check the output in Settings → Audio and your computer or interface volume.
  2. Check Master, mute and solo controls in Mixxit.
  3. Make sure the playhead is inside a clip and its audio file is available.

If an output was disconnected, reconnect it and press Play again. If that fails, try System default.

The export reports clipping.

Lower Master and export again. File → Last Export Summary shows the latest result. Listen to the file too: MP3 compression can introduce peaks beyond those measured before encoding.

07 / ACCESS

Trial, activation & updates

Open Trial & licence in the main window to return to the overview, start or restore a trial, or activate your licence. After activation, the same overview shows your licence status.

How does the trial start?

Choose the free trial, verify your email and then choose Start my trial. Email verification alone does not start it. Returning with the same account keeps the original end date. Explore first lets you look around without starting a trial.

What happens when the trial ends?

After 14 days, Mixxit returns to Preview Mode: you can open projects and listen in 30-second previews, but editing and export require a licence. Your files stay on your computer. There is no automatic charge.

If access ends during your work, choose Continue in Preview Mode and save that open project before closing it.

Can I buy without starting a trial?

Yes. Visit Pricing and choose Buy Mixxit, or use Buy Mixxit in the app. The website shows the current price, any introductory offer and licence details before you continue to checkout. Lemon Squeezy emails your licence key after purchase. Download and open Mixxit, then choose the licence activation option and enter your key. No trial activation or reinstall is needed.

How do I activate or move a licence?

Enter the key from your purchase email in the activation controls. A licence allows one activated computer at a time. To move it, save your work and choose Deactivate this Mac on the old computer before activating the new one. Signing out does not deactivate it.

If the old computer is unavailable or activation fails, email info@mixxit.app with your order reference. Keep your licence key private.

My licence cannot be validated.

Reconnect to the internet and reopen Mixxit to retry. A previously validated licence can work offline for up to 14 days after its last successful check. If the app reports a rejected key or removed activation, follow the message in the account controls or contact support.

How do I update Mixxit?

Save your project, then choose Mixxit → Check for Updates….

Updates within your purchased major version are included. Future paid major upgrades are optional. Back up your projects before trying another major version; newer projects may not open in an older app. See licensing and purchase questions.

What can envelope usage reports include?

When Measure feature use or Share usage over time is enabled in Settings → Privacy, Mixxit can report whether you add, change or delete envelope points, and which control you use: Volume, Low, Mid, High, Filter, Echo or Reverb. Session measurement counts completed edits, rather than individual mouse movements. Sharing over time records each action and control combination only once per app session. Exact settings, track names and project contents are not included. You can switch these choices off independently in Settings → Privacy.

Do I have to share usage reports?

No. Your trial and licence work with reporting off. On first start, choose “Share & continue” for usage summaries and crash reports, or “Not now” to leave them off. Open “Privacy settings” on the same screen to adjust each choice. In the updated Mac app, Measure feature use starts on for new users: it helps us understand actions within one app session, without linking separate visits or your account. “Not now” does not change this setting. Earlier saved choices are preserved. Turn it off in Settings → Privacy to stop session reports. Share usage over time separately links visits and stays off until you enable it. Reports exclude audio, filenames and project contents; Mac session reports also exclude location. Turning a choice off clears pending reports but does not delete reports already sent. If a preference cannot be saved, retry before restarting. Restart Mixxit before re-enabling crash reports. Read the privacy notice for retention and deletion details. Website Analytics preferences are separate from the app. In the website banner, “Allow all” enables detailed analytics and advertising measurement; “Reject optional” declines both. Choose “Settings” to decide separately, or reopen Analytics preferences in the footer to change your choices. Closing settings does not grant permission. Advertising measurement has its own allow/decline choice there: it lets Google Ads connect ad clicks with Mac download-button clicks, not completed installations. It stays off until you allow it; declining detailed PostHog analytics does not change that separate choice. Declining advertising measurement stops future collection and clears this site’s Google advertising cookies. The website uses cookieless PostHog analytics for page views, reading progress, performance, selected button clicks and approximate country and region. We also count visits to page-not-found screens without sending the missing address, its query or fragment. Location comes from the network connection and may be inaccurate with VPNs; no GPS or coordinates are collected. PostHog derives a daily identifier without storing an analytics identifier in your browser. Detailed website analytics, with a stored browser identifier to recognise return visits for up to six months, requires your permission. Use Analytics preferences in the footer to change that choice, or turn all website analytics off. Browser privacy signals also stop website analytics. Choices reload the page.
